A white lab service dog sat on the floor alongside it's users wheelchair. Disabled Access Day 2024.

Disabled Access Day began in the UK in 2015 to celebrate new opportunities for people with disabilities and highlight some of the amazing things you can do - such as sensory experiences, tours and performances in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Every two years, Disabled Access Day encourages people to try something new and in 2024 the event is #YouAndSomewhereNew.

How can your pet business get involved in Disabled Access Day 2024?

Disabled Access Day is sponsored by Euans Guide, a comprehensive business directory that lists and reviews businesses on their accessibility.

If your pet business has disabled access, it’s a great opportunity to create a listing so more people can access your establishment. You can also receive feedback from people with disabilities on improving your pet businesses’ accessibility.

Users of the guide can search for businesses, and filter features such as ‘braille’, ‘sign language’, and ‘assistance dogs allowed’.

Whether you’re a dog walking, sitting, grooming or photography pet business - this is a fantastic tool to help people find your pet business, inform them of your features and prepare for their visit before they arrive. You can apply for a listing here.

How can I make my pet business more accessible to disabled people?

There are some changes you can make in the short term to make your pet business more accessible, such as:

  • Short, easy-to-read signage
  • Signage to show your business allows assistant/therapy dogs
  • Ensuring your business can be contactable in a variety of different ways (such as phone, chatbot, messenger)
  • Checking if your website is easy to navigate and compatible with certain accessibility software
  • If you own a shop, are popular products easy to reach?
  • Additional seating for those who may need to sit
  • Easy to grip door handles and no obstructions on the floors
  • Ensuring staff are trained to assist those with disabilities or having a plan in place if they are not (especially in an emergency)

Assistant Dogs UK also outlines key information for service providers regarding the law for assistant dogs and how you can do more than just the legal obligations.
